About The AMBER Web Portal

The AMBER Web Portal has revolutionized the way police issue AMBER Alerts by reducing the time required to issue an alert up to 90 percent, which will statistically increase the likelihood that children will be rescued quickly and safely. The AMBER Web Portal is a web-based application that law enforcement (or the primary alerting officer) uses to alert and notify the public of an abduction at anytime of the day. When law enforcement officials are notified about an abducted child, they must first determine if the case meets the local AMBER Alert Plan criteria for triggering an alert. While the criteria for each plan may vary, the U.S. Department of Justice recommends (and most plans follow) the following criteria:

  • There is reasonable belief by law enforcement that an abduction has occurred
  • The abduction is of a child age 17 years or younger
  • The law-enforcement agency believes that the child is in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death
  • There is enough descriptive information about the victim and the abduction for law enforcement to believe that the public will be able to assist in the recovery of the child

When information about the victim, suspect and vehicle is ready, and the alert is authorized by a DOJ appointed AMBER Alert Coordinator, the officer sends the alert via The AMBER Web Portal. This alert is simultaneously sent to registered cell phones, emails, faxes, billboards, and much more. Registered users consist of the general public, states media partners, the Department of Justice, other law enforcement agencies, private businesses, and more. Some of those agencies will re-issues the alert through their distribution channels, for example, television networks will broadcast the abduction to their public audience and the Department of Transportation will broadcast on freeway billboards to those driving on the road. The AMBER Web Portal has been a free service since 2004 and brought to law enforcement and the public through corporate sponsorships and Child ID Kit funds. Anyone can sign-up to receive email or text message AMBER Alerts in our Primary Alerting States: Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Missouri, Kentucky, and Rhode Island. Secondary states are alerted for via AmberAlert.com homepage.Because The AMBER Web Portal is a primary alert and notification system, it bypasses many delays of up to an hour caused by extra channels in the current state-by-state run programs. This system reduces the potential for errors and slowing the time between the first local contact and widespread information access. Some of The AMBER Web Portal’s goals include:

  • Provide advances notification technology for child-abduction cases
  • Enable law-enforcement agencies to gain the immediate assistance of thousands of broadcast listeners and viewers, simultaneously
  • Serve as a deterrent to kidnappers
  • Increase the number of state who use The AMBER Web Portal as to implement a cross-border alerting ability
